No, I’m not on a diet. I made the decision to live a healthy lifestyle (with sweet treats here and there, of course). A lot of people have been asking me about my “diet”, how I maintain my weight and if I live by any special rules.
First off, I actually like to eat healthy. And that’s why I do it. Trust me, if I didn’t like doing it, there's a 98% chance I wouldn’t. Eating healthy makes me feel way better than when I give my body junk to survive off of. So why should I eat junk when it doesn’t benefit me? That doesn’t mean that I never eat junk or unhealthy though.
Fruit makes it’s way into my mouth more than once (or even twice) a day. I have a huge sweet tooth and always crave fruit. How do I get a good amount of fruit into my day?
- Homemade fruit smoothies
- Adding fruit to oatmeal, yogurt and cereal
- Eating it plain, in-between meals or as a side
I am in love with healthy fats. I eat a variety of nuts and nut butter every day. I admit, I used to be scared of all fats back during my ED days but now I eat them without feeling guilty! I’ve noticed many good changes ever since I started including them in my diet again. Some of my favorite ways to eat them are:
- Eating them plain
- Adding nuts to oatmeal, yogurt and cereal
- I love the PB & apple and the PB & carrot combo. But you knew that already.
- Nut butter on toast
And I love saturated fat, too. A little bit is healthy for you. :) My favorite saturated fats:
- Full fat yogurt
- Cheese
- Deli meat
- Butter
I don’t take many supplements. The only ones I take are multi vitamins (I don’t take them daily) and protein powder. My favorite way to use protein powder:
- Protein & fruit smoothies
- Protein packed recipes
- Protein oatmeal
The protein powder I am using right now is a German brand called “Leyenberger – Your Whey”. Not my favorite but it works for now.
I like to have a night time snack after dinner everyday. It’s usually plain chocolate ( I have chocolate everyday.. I love it!), yogurt with chocolate chips or any other sweet treat I’m craving.
Eating a sweet treat everyday helps me to not overeat on junk.
And lets not forget carbs! During my past ED, I was so scared of carbs. Not anymore..I love them! Some of my favorites are:
- Cereal
- Bread
- Pasta
- Rolled Oats
Just like every other person, I do fall off track sometimes. The important thing is that you get back on track. Disclaimer: I am not a dietitian and don’t think the way I eat is perfect. Just because the way I eat works for me, doesn’t mean it’ll work for you. My best advice is to experiment and find out what works best for you.
Do you live by any special “diet” rules? What are some of your favorite sweet treats and carbs? If you take supplements, what kind do you take?
congrats lovely! I am glad you are really finding variety in your diet and beating that past ed voice. Fats are what have helped me a lot!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Alex! Eating healthy makes me feel so good.. inside and out! Eating junk is boring.. but eating a healthy diet of a variety of foods rocks! Same here, fats are great! :)
DeleteI agree with liking to eat healthy, I always feel much better and enjoy the taste too!xx
ReplyDeleteYup, thats how I feel too! :) Yay, we share the same name too! :)
DeleteI don't really live by any "special diet" rules besides eating plant-based whole foods. I love my healthy fats, carbs, and protein. I also love coconuts and peanuts-- as well as bread. So many people say bread and carbs are bad for you but I feel so bad without them haha.
ReplyDeleteI think living by special "diet rules" cant last long. As long as you eat healthy, whole foods you're A-OK. :)
DeleteYup, I've heard people say carbs are bad too. I feel bad and slugish without them, too.
I loved reading all of your easy ways to sneak healthy foods into your daily eats. Can't wait to try some of these suggestions!
ReplyDeleteThanks Laura! Glad they were helpful. :)
DeleteI totally agree with you - I love to eat healthy. I am also a total sucker for chocolate - I find that lately I am having some every day too. I also love cheese and all carbs - there is no way I could give up my pasta, bread or potatoes. It's great to see you doing so well :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Bec!
DeleteYup, chocolate addict right here. ;)

ReplyDeleteAwesome! :) Yup, moderation is key.
DeleteLove this! I LOVE to eat healthy. I love the food, how it makes me feel, and all that. But I do love everything in moderation, too. Cereal? Yes please. Nut butter? I basically overdose. Ha ha great post girl
ReplyDeleteThanks Brittany! Uhh yeah, nut butter never lasts long around me. :P
DeleteThis is such a great post,Shannon!
ReplyDeleteI really admire how you are able to find a good balance without depriving yourself from anything. I wish I could eat what I feel like without anxiety or stress because I feel like the mental struggle is often what causes my stomach cramps etc. afterwards. :/
However,I totally share your love for nut butter and cheese. Even though cheese is a bit tricky for me still,I love it a lot and it's worth every bite! :)
Thanks so much Kat!
DeleteIt took me a long time to find a good and healthy balance.
I KNOW you'll be able to eat what you what, when you want without feeling bad. Just keep your head up and keep on going!
I just basically saw all of my favorite foods and subscribed in a matter of seconds :D
ReplyDeleteLove your blog! :)
P.S. Although a very new reader, I'm really looking forward to hear more about your story.

Aw, thats so sweet.. thank you! That really means a lot to me. :)
Deletethis looks really good :)
ReplyDeletei have a question: which oil do you like for cooking?
i know that olive oil is supposed to be really healthy, but i dislike the taste of it in most meals...
Hi there and thank you!
DeleteI almost always use olive oil for cooking. Sometimes I'll use butter. In American I would use a non stick cooking spray but we sadly dont have that here in Germany.
Have you tried using sunflower seed oil? I'll be sure to let you know if I find any other alternatives! :)
I love all of your food photos, as well as your outlook on food and dieting! I try to eat healthy, but so many people think that I'm dieting, and it's annoying. I always tell them that I'm eating exactly what I want to be eating.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI know what you mean, that happens to me a lot. I wish people would understand that just because I'm eating healthy doesnt mean that I'm on a diet. I CHOOSE to eat healthy and love it. :)
I love when you do posts like these!!! Your pictures look so yummy!!! =D
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of getting some Protein Powder and starting to add it to my morning latte and maybe some smoothies when I make them =) Uni is starting in a month and I'll have to re-think my food options, as I study 47km away from home and the food there isn't always that good..I'm thinking of just taking food from home =)

Thanks so much Rosie!
DeleteI really like using protein powder. It does a great job of holding me over until the next meal. Let me know what kind of protein powder you decide on. :)
this was such an amazing post to read :) xo
ReplyDeleteThank you! <3 Glad you liked it!
DeleteI eat more fruit than most too because of my sweet tooth!!
ReplyDeleteAnd carbs and sweets, well, cereal is one of them. Love love love me some cereal!
Mhmm, who doesnt love fruit?? :)
Delete.. and cereal of course. :)
DeleteMini Ritters!! My favourite thing to bring back from Germany :) Well, apart from the bread. And Hanutas.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have an excellent balance there. And you're absolutely right, eating healthy is fantastic and definitely something I prefer over eating the way I used to.
Yum, I love the mini Ritter chocolate! Helps me not eat a whole bar. :)
DeleteThank you!
I love that you don't follow a specific diet and that you're open to all foods. Very awesome!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I feel a lot better eating healthy BUT allowing myself to enjoy unhealthy food too. :)
Deletelove all your eats! I eat the same way, love all my fruits and nut butters seem to make their way into my meals several times a day! I love healthy fats, they make my body happy. I also struggles with fear foods, and still do. Carbs were definitely to get over, but now I love them! A good hearty whole wheat nutty bread is amazing. I have been reading lately into other blogs that mention bread is not good? They say something a long the lines that it slows you down and causes you to be sluggish? I always thought the opposite; carbs give energy! What's your thoughts?
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI agree, healthy fats make my body happy. Yup, carbs were a fear food of mine, too. But now I really like them and eat them often.
Yeah, I've heard people say that carbs arent good for you. My take on this: some bread is not healthy. Instead of eating white bread, go for whole grain. Whole grain bread (along with other whole grains) are good for your body and have many great health benefits. I agree, carbs give us energy!
LOVE this! I've been travelling a lot this past week and I have been cravingggg some healthy food! I've been trying to eat healthy but it's been hard.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I agree, it can be hard to eat healthy while traveling. But at least you tried!
DeleteI love nut butters. I hate being without my peanut butter or almond butter! I am a fruit addict too. I love that you don't follow a specific diet. For my own, I don't believe in counting calories. Instead, I like to listen to my body and eat what feels right for it.
ReplyDeleteI love nut butters too. They never ever last long around me.. :)
DeleteI agree! Listening to your body is better than following any special diet rules.
I love the way you eat. I found myself nodding along to your post. It is all about balance, good fats, good carbs, protein, vitamins and minerals. And I really believe our bodies tell us what we need if we really listen. Your food looks delicious to me, especially since I love to eat this way too. Healthy food tastes fantastic and you feel great too. Win, win in my book.
ReplyDeleteHello,
