In my previous post I mentioned that I was going to go to my first Zumba class with my mom this week. A lot of you were interested in hearing (well, reading) about my experience so that’s what this whole blog post is about. I would love for you to share your thoughts and experiences with Zumba in the comments!
First, a little background on my dancing history. When I was younger all I took was ballet. Some of my friends took hip-hop and as much as I’d love to be great at dancing like them.. I’m not.
Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance-fitness program.
Going into the Zumba class for beginners, my mom and I were both nervous. We didn’t know what to expect and didn’t want to embarrass ourselves.
Would we be able to catch up and dance along? Would everyone stare at us? Would the instructor think we’re crazy for coming because we cant dance?
With so many thoughts about what the class would be like, we gathered up all our nerves and just went for it! Now, looking back at it all, I don’t know why we were so scared to go.
We’re a small group of women that have never taken Zumba before. Everyone was really friendly and our instructor made us feel comfortable and welcome.
We started with a short warm up and then we got right into it. The music was playing almost non-stop and was very fun and upbeat. Our instructor stood at the front and danced facing her back against us (we could see her in the mirror though) so we could easily pick up the body movements and try to do them as well.
For each song, we did different moves but repeated them at a certain point of the song. I found this very helpful because then I knew which moves were coming up. This made it a lot easier to dance along.
There were some moves that I just couldn’t get the hang of so I kind of did my own version of the dance move. For almost the whole time I didn’t look around me, I didn’t look at anyone except the instructor. I was so concentrated on getting the movies right.
I did look around a few times and noticed I wasn’t the only one not getting some moves right. We all most definitely did not look like Zumba pros. I don’t meant his in a bad way. We’re all beginners and I’m pretty sure we’ll start to get the hang of this dancing workout in a few classes.
The class was one hour long and we were moving the whole entire time. This class got us all sweating pretty quickly but we were having too much fun to care. My mom and I both agreed that we really enjoyed the class even though it meant getting out of our comfort zone a bit. We’re both excited for the next class!
Don’t be afraid to go take a Zumba class yourself! We’re all beginners at some point. Hey, if I can do it.. then you can too! :)
Have you ever been scared to take a new fitness/workout class? Did you end up going or not? What is your favorite kind of dance?
